Cardinals Take Two From Pipers

WINONA, MINN.—Fresh off a six-day hiatus from competition, the Hamline University baseball team traveled to Saint Mary's (Minn.) (DH) for a Tuesday-afternoon bout. The Pipers couldn't hang onto a 4-0 lead in a 6-4 (7 innings) loss to the Cardinals in game one, before they couldn't rebound in a 9-1 loss in game two.

The Pipers fall to 7-17, 1-7 MIAC, while the sweep sends the Cardinals' record to 14-13, 6-4 MIAC.

Cullen Buck gave Hamline a 1-0 lead in the first inning when he led off with a walk, stole second base, and scored off Tyler Johnson's single.

The second inning resulted three Hamline runs, as Avery Nelson led things off when he reached on an error and scored from first base off Avery Liebren's single to widen the score to 2-0. Cullen Buck's intentional walk, and Max Gerstner's single loaded the bases for Owen Christenson, who walked home Liebren to widen the Pipers' lead to 3-0. Mac Enlow concluded Hamline's scoring in the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Buck from third base to make things 4-0.

The Cardinals notched eight of their 10 total hits in the fifth and sixth innings, which resulted in three runs in each frame en route to a 6-4 victory over the Pipers.

Gerstner, Enlow, Johnson, and Liebren each tallied a hit for Hamline. Zach Branson pitched the first four innings for the Pipers, before Jonah Smallfield and Braden Schneider came in relief. The trio collectively allowed 10 hits, six runs, and tallied 10 strikeouts. Branson allowed five hits, three runs, and registered eight strikeouts in the no-decision.

A seven-run Cardinals fourth inning gave them enough cushion in a 9-1 victory over the Pipers, who tallied their lone run in the fifth inning courtesy of Colin Schuetz' RBI-single that scored Gavin Renwick (walk).

Schuetz led Hamline at the plate with a 2-for-4 outing. Mac Enlow and Braeden Bourne each went 1-for-4 with a double.

The Pipers utilized six different pitchers, who collectively allowed nine hits, and nine runs (four earned).

Hamline will return to action on Thursday, April 21 against Bethel (DH) at CHS Field. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
