SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University softball team's home opener pitted them against Macalester at Meredith Field on Saturday afternoon. Kira Krueger's game-tying RBI-single sent game one to extra innings, before Emily Pederson's three-run home run in the eighth secured them a 7-4 victory. The Pipers bounced back with an 8-2 victory in game two.
The split sends Hamline's record to 11-7, 2-3 MIAC, while Macalester ends the day with a 7-13, 1-3 MIAC mark.
Macalester 7, Hamline 4 (8 Innings)
Hamline set the tone with a 1-0 lead in the second inning, where Kira Krueger led off with a hit by pitch before she scored on Gabby Tuhy's double. The Scots rebounded with a 3-1 lead with a third-inning run, and two more in the fourth. RBI-singles from Megan Rubbelke, and Kira Krueger knotted the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning.
Macalester took a brief 4-3 lead in the sixth inning before the Pipers tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh, when Jenna Rubbelke doubled and later scored on Krueger's single.
The Pipers couldn't attain that momentum in extra innings when Emily Pederson's three-run home run in the top of the eighth gave Macalester enough cushion in a 7-4 victory.
Gabby Cook went 3-for-4 at the plate for Hamline, while Krueger converted a 2-for-3 outing.
Theresa Klinnert went the distance on the pitching rubber for the Pipers, where she gave up seven runs (six earned), and 12 hits.
Hamline 8, Macalester 2
The Pipers, who finished the game with 13 hits, led from start-to-finish much thanks to a four-run second inning that gave them enough cushion in an 8-2 victory.
Jenna Rubbelke, Amber Peterson, Megan Rubbelke, Kira Krueger, Gabby Cook, and Lydia Lecher each registered a pair of hits at the plate. Krueger finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.
Dana Rosbacka went the distance in the pitching circle for Hamline. She surrendered just three hits, two runs, and one walk.
The Pipers will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 10 at Meredith Field against Carleton (DH) at 1 p.m.
