SAINT PAUL, MINN.—One-of-two 2022 MWLC Semifinal Games pitted No. 3 seed Northwestern (Minn.) at No. 2 seed Hamline on Wednesday night. The Pipers never trailed in a 12-10 decision over the Eagles.
The Pipers, who improve to 6-7 overall, will make their fifth all-time appearance in the MWLC Championship Game on Saturday, May 7, when they'll travel to No. 1 seed Lake Forest for a 4 p.m. game. The Eagles conclude their season with a 5-10 record.
Hamline 12, Northwestern (Minn.) 10
Molly Garin scored five of her game-high seven goals in the opening half, which engineered a Pipers squad who held an 8-4 halftime lead despite the shots being dead even at 13-13. Northwestern (Minn.) outscored the Pipers 4-3 in the third frame, which inched their deficit closer to 11-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles out shot the Pipers 12-4 in the fourth quarter, where Garin's seventh tally of the contest with 7:32 left pushed Hamline's lead to 12-9. The Eagles closed the game's scoring with 3:25 left in the fourth quarter courtesy of Cara Smith, who narrowed the margin to 12-10.
Garin finished the game with seven goals, while Taryn Leonard notched two goals and two assists for four points. Garin added five draw controls, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers to her stat line.
Maitland Luksan contributed a two-goal game for Hamline, who were out shot 31-23.
The Eagles were led by Samantha Wiebold's five goals, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Justine Case made 12 saves in net for Hamline, while Brittany Clark stopped six shots for the Eagles.
