SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's hockey team looked to even their season series against UW-Superior at Tria Rink on Tuesday night. The Pipers fell short of that feat with a 4-2 loss to the Yellowjackets.
Hamline drops to 6-7 on the season, while UW-Superior improves to 8-7. The Pipers dropped a 5-3 decison at the Yellowjackets on November 4.
UW-Superior 4, Hamline 2
Anna Scherling made things 1-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets at 17:26 of the first period before Hamline converted a rare feat. Scoring at the buzzer is common in basketball, but the Pipers were able to pull it off on the ice as Emme Nelson banged home a shot in a scrum at the net to even the score at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
The Pipers couldn't maintain that momentum despite a 12-8 shots advantage in the second frame, as the Yellowjackets pushed their lead to 3-1 behind goals from Cora Coz at 5:54 of the second, and Andrea Stelling at 10:07.
Hamline also controlled tempo over the third period with a 12-7 shots advantage, which resulted in Sydney Lemke's power-play tally at 14:36 that got them within the Yellowjackets 3-2. That was all Hamline could muster as UW-Superior put the nail in the coffin at 17:24 behind Kailey Swerhun's goal that pushed her team's cushion to 4-2.
Airika Penney made 21 saves in net for the Pipers, while Rose Beeman stopped 32 shots for UW-Superior.
Ally Steffensmeier and Haley Eder-Zdechlik contributed assists for a Hamline team who outshot the Yellowjackets 34-25.
The Pipers will host St. Catherine at Tria Rink on Friday, January 13 at 3 p.m.
