Pipers Can't Get Over The Hump Against Beavers

TOPEKA, KAN.—The Hamline University baseball team embarked on the final leg of a three-game swing against Buena Vista in Topeka, Kansas on Sunday afternoon. The Pipers offense found a rhythm on the Beavers' bullpen, but couldn't get over the hump in an 11-5 loss.

Hamline falls to 0-3 on the season, while Buena Vista stays unbeaten at 3-0.

Buena Vista 11, Hamline 5

Starting pitcher Mason Gehling scattered just four hits and held Hamline scoreless through five innings, which helped propel Buena Vista to a 7-0 lead. The bullpen couldn't keep that shutout intact in the sixth inning, as Mac Enlow's lead-off single and Tyler Johnson's walk put runners on base. Johnson and Enlow each advanced a base on a wild pitch before Owen Christenson knocked in the dynamic duo with a two-run single that cut Hamline's deficit to 7-2.

The seventh inning resulted in four Buena Vista runs that widened their cushion 11-2, before the Pipers closed the game with three unanswered runs. Colin Schuetz led off the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit single before he moved to third on Finn Melchior's double, and made the score 11-3 on Enlow's sacrifice fly.

The ninth inning saw Hamline plate two runs as Schuetz (reach on error) and Melchior (walk) each scored from third base off a fielder's choice, which put things at 11-5.

Caden Erickson went 2-for-3 at the plate for Hamline, while Melchior finished 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Enlow and Christenson each registered a pair of RBI, while Schuetz scored two runs.

Parker Leipzig, Josh Cary, Jake Simon, and Dalton Maxwell each logged at least two innings pitched for Hamline. Gehling struck out seven and allowed four hits over five innings of scoreless work for Buena Vista, before their bullpen surrendered five runs over the final four frames.

The Pipers will play Crown (DH) at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Wednesday, March 1 at 5:30 a.m.
