ST. PETER, MINN.—The Hamline University women's hockey team made the one-hour trip south to No. 2 Gustavus Adolphus for a Friday-night bout. The third period resulted in eight shots on goal and a 2-1 scoring edge for Hamline, but it wasn't enough as the Gusties held on for a 3-2 victory despite a career-high 46 saves from goaltender Maddie Nickell.
The Pipers fall to 7-12-1, 6-6-1 MIAC while the Gusties, who came off a heartbreaking 2-1 (OT)Â loss to No. 1 River Falls on January 30, improve to 17-3-0, 12-1-0 MIAC.
Gustavus 3, Hamline 2
The Gusties out shot the Pipers 39-3 throughout the opening two periods. After a scoreless first period, Gustavus rattled off a trio of goals courtesy of Hailey Holland's shorthanded tally at 4:00 of the second that made things 1-0, and a pair of scores from Kristine Press at 9:51 of the second, and at 4:40 (shorthanded) of the third that widened the margin to 3-0.
Hamline found their footing in the third period with eight shots on goal, and two unanswered goals to close the game. Morgan Wohlers set the tone with a power-play goal at 4:50 that narrowed the score to 3-1, followed by Sydney Lemke's score at 11:13 that closed the margin to 3-2.
Emme Nelson, Lucy Hoelscher, and Ashley Grabau were each credited assists in the game. Katie McCoy stopped nine shots in net for the Gusties, who out shot Hamline 49-11.
The Pipers will host Gustavus at Tria Rink tomorrow, Saturday, February 4 at 2 p.m.
