Pipers Cap Spring Break With Losses to Wesleyan and UW-Oshkosh

CLERMONT, FLA.—The Hamline University softball team capped off their spring break with a pair of losses by scores of 8-2 to Wesleyan (Conn.), and 4-1 to UW-Oshkosh in Clermont, Florida on Saturday morning.

The Pipers fall to 6-7-1 with the losses.

Wesleyan (Conn.) 8, Hamline 2

The Cardinals pounded seven hits and forced a pair of Hamline errors in the second inning, which resulted in an early 7-0 lead. They pushed their advantage to 8-0 with a run in the top of the fifth before the Pipers found an answer in the bottom half of that frame. Maddie Johnson walked, and would score all the way from first base on a wild throw from Jenna Rubbelke's bunt single to make things 8-1. Rubbelke, who reached third on that play, would cut Hamline's deficit to 8-2 off Josephine Cariveau's sacrifice bunt.

Cardinals pitcher Kelly Baker tallied 10 strikeouts and allowed seven hits and zero earned runs in the complete-game victory. Rubbelke and Cariveau each registered a pair of hits for the Pipers.

Hamline pitchers Montana Miller and Dana Rosbacka combined to give up 12 hits and no walks.

UW-Oshkosh 4, Hamline 1

Sophie Stork pitched the entire game for Hamline as she allowed eight hits and four runs. The Pipers offense treated her to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, when fellow two-sport women's basketball athlete Lydia Lecher tripled and scored on Abbey Herbert's single.

The Titans put an end to the shutout courtesy of Sophie Wery's bases-loaded double in the fifth inning that gave her team a 2-1 lead. Hannah Ritter, who reached on an intentional walk, would score from third on a wild pitch to push UW-Oshkosh's lead to 3-1 through five innings. The Titans made it 4-1 in the sixth inning when Haylie Wittman doubled, advanced to third on Brianna Davis' groundout, and scored on Morgan Miller's sacrifice fly.

Sydney Semitz allowed just three hits in the complete-game pitching victory for the Titans. Lecher led Hamline with a 2-for-3 outing that included a triple.

The Pipers will open MIAC play on Saturday, April 1 at Meredith Field against St. Scholastica (DH) at 1 p.m.
