MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team picked up their first wins of the season via 11-0 and 10-6 scores over North Central (Minn.) at US Bank Stadium on Thursday morning.
The Pipers improve to 2-5, while the Rams kickoff their season with an 0-2 record.
Hamline 11, North Central (Minn.) 0 (7 innings)
Hamline starting pitcher Parker Leipzig registered 10 strikeouts and allowed just two hits and one walk over five innings of work, which kept the Rams off the scoreboard. Leipzig received run support in each of the opening four innings, which amounted to a 9-0 Hamline lead after he exited the game after the fifth inning. Xavier Bembnister and Henry Reiley each pitched an inning in relief, and got a pair of sixth-inning runs en route to an 11-0 victory.
Eleven different Pipers notched a hit, led by Tyler Johnson's 2-for-3 outing. Max Gerstner, Ian Sandbo, and Colin Schuetz each knocked in a pair of runs. Mac Enlow, Schuetz, Alec Ralph, and Avery Liebren each doubled for a Pipers team that accumulated 12 hits.
Leipzig, Bembnister, and Reiley combined for 13 strikeouts on the pitching rubber.
Hamline 10, North Central (Minn.) 6
North Central set the tone with a 1-0 lead in the second inning. This ignited a Hamline offense that came through with a six-run third inning and a three-run fourth that gave them a 9-1 lead, which proved to be enough cushion in a 10-6 victory.
Mac Enlow and Gavin Renwick each registered a two-hit game that included a double. Tyler Johnson went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Finn Melchior drove in a pair of runs on one hit, and also scored two runs.
Luke Schmaedeke, Jake Simon, Josh Cary, and Jonah Smallfield each saw pitching action for Hamline. They combined to give up six hits, and notch six strikeouts.
The Pipers will face Sul Ross State (DH) in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday, March 11 at 9 a.m. (MT).
