Pipers End Season With a Pair of Losses to Saints

DULUTH, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team's 2023 season finale pitted them at St. Scholastica (DH) on Friday afternoon, where they dropped a pair of decisions by scores of 7-2 and 13-3 (7 innings).

The Pipers end their season with a 10-28, 6-14 MIAC record, while the Saints conclude their campaign with a 9-24, 7-13 MIAC mark.

St. Scholastica 7, Hamline 2

Each team scored a run in the first and fourth innings en route to a 2-2 score heading to the bottom of the sixth frame, where the Saints tallied five unanswered runs to secure a 7-2 victory.

Owen Christenson paced Hamline at the dish with a 2-for-3 outing that included a run scored. Nick Zezulka's one-run double highlighted his 1-for-3 performance. Zach Branson allowed nine hits, five runs and just one walk over 5 1/3 innings pitched before Parker Leipzig surrendered three hits and two runs in the final 2/3.

Matt Forrest scattered six hits and notched three strikeouts in the complete-game pitching win for the Saints.

St. Scholastica 13, Hamline 3 (7 innings)

St. Scholastica's five-run first inning gave them enough cushion in a 13-3 (7 innings) victory.

Both teams combined for eight errors in the contest.

Ethan Smith and Owen Christenson each notched 2-for-3 outings at the dish for Hamline. Ian Sandbo's two-run single in the seventh inning highlighted his 1-for-4 game while Gavin Renwick went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.

Conor Mestemacher, Dalton Maxwell, and Xavier Bembnister combined to allow 16 hits, 13 runs (seven earned), and notch eight strikeouts. Jake Schelonka and Jake Perala collectively surrendered seven hits and three runs (two earned) while notching six strikeouts.

The Pipers bid farewell to seniors Owen Christenson, Matt Rusch, Gavin Renwick, Jonah Smallfield, Ian Sandbo, Avery Liebren, and Zach Branson.
