Pipers Drop a Four-Set Match to Blue Devils

MENOMONIE, WIS.—The Hamline University women's volleyball team embarked on a one-hour trip to UW-Stout for a non-conference bout on Wednesday night. The Blue Devils hit above .200 in each set en route to a 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19) victory over the Pipers.

Hamline falls to 2-4, while UW-Stout stays undefeated at 8-0.

UW-Stout 3, Hamline 1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19)

The Blue Devils led from start-to-finish in a 25-16 victory in set one. The second set resulted in just five combined errors, 17 kills and a .375 hitting percentage for the Pipers. The Blue Devils matched that performance with 17 kills on a .302 hitting mark in the second frame that helped keep the score at 22-22, where Kennedy Tutak registered back-to-back kills that gave the Pipers a lead they wouldn't surrender in a 25-23 win.

Hamline couldn't eclipse the .100 hitting mark in a 25-21 loss in set three, and a 25-19 defeat in set four.

The Pipers had the upper hand in digs (63-59) and service aces (8-6) throughout the four-set match. Jenna Rubbelke led the way with a game-high 19 digs, along with two service aces for Hamline. Mandy Dierks came through with three service aces.

Faith Johnson added 15 digs for the Pipers, while Elizabeth Lopata led the offense with 13 kills. Kaitlyn Kotek finished with 36 assists for Hamline.

Sidney Hovermann paced UW-Stout with a game-high 14 kills, which engineered an offense that hit .266. Brynn Hessel led the Blue Devil defense with six total blocks, while Terrah Moshier had 15 digs.

The Pipers will return to action at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament on Saturday, September 16, where they'll face Illinois Wesleyan at 2 p.m., and Wartburg at 4 p.m.
