Falcons Get Through Pipers in 2024-25 Season Opener

SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The Hamline University women's basketball team fell to UW-River Falls 65-58 on day one of the Saint Benedict Tournament on Saturday morning in the 2024-25 season opener.

The Pipers start the season 0-1, while the Falcons improve to 1-0.

In the first quarter, the Pipers and Falcons ended tied at 20 points each. Hamline was effective inside, scoring eight points in the paint and recording eight offensive rebounds, leading to a total of 11. UW-River Falls capitalized on its bench, contributing nine points, and connected on 4-of-6 three-pointers. Both teams experienced multiple lead changes and ties, with each team leading three times throughout the quarter.

In the second quarter, UW-River Falls outscored the Pipers 16-8, extending their lead. UW-River Falls displayed effective scoring with 5-of-14 baskets and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, while also converting all four free throws. They dominated the boards with 13 rebounds, including 10 defensive, compared to Hamline's eight total rebounds. The Pipers struggled offensively, making only 4-of-15 shots and missing all six 3-pointers.

In the third quarter, Hamline outscored UW-River Falls 19-7, showcasing a strong defensive and offensive effort. The Pipers made 50% of their shots, going 6-for-12, and excelled from beyond the arc with 3-for-6 shooting. They also capitalized on turnovers, scoring six points off turnovers, while UW-River Falls struggled, shooting just 2-for-13 from the field and committing four turnovers. Hamline's bench contributed significantly with 10 points, further highlighting their depth.

UW-River Falls outscored Hamline 22-11 in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on superior shooting efficiency with 7-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. The Pipers struggled with turnovers, committing three, and were out-rebounded 7-6. UW-River Falls' Olivia Hoerl contributed significantly with key baskets and free throws to maintain their lead against the Pipers en route to a 65-58 victory.

The Pipers featured several standout players based on their early performances. Camille Cummings led the team with 17 points, thanks to her 7-for-12 shooting, including three successful 3-pointers. Sophie Stork contributed 10 points, making four of her 10 baskets and adding a 3-pointer. Kate Trachsel also made an impact with her defensive play, recording two steals alongside her seven points and four assists. Evelyn Wiltrout matched Trachsel's defensive effort with two steals as well. 

Olivia Hoerl emerged as a key player for UW-River Falls, leading the team with 18 points, including three successful 3-pointers on four attempts. Her performance was bolstered by six rebounds. Braelyn Beiler also contributed significantly from beyond the arc, hitting 3-of-5 three-point attempts to accumulate nine points. Jaya Hatlestad was notable on defense with two steals. Olivia Miron was effective at the free-throw line, making 9-of-10 attempts, and also led the team with five assists and six rebounds.

Day two of the Saint Benedict Tournament will pit Hamline against Minnesota Morris tomorrow, Sunday, November 10 at 1 p.m.
