SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The No. 6 seed Hamline University women's basketball team made the short trip to No. 3 seed St. Catherine University in the 2023-24 MIAC Tournament First Round. In a back-and-forth affair that saw 10 tied scores and 10 lead changes, it took two overtimes to settle a result. The second overtime ended with a Wildcat 7-0 run, which gave them a come-from-behind 70-65 victory over the Pipers.
Hamline ends their season with a 12-13 record, while St. Catherine moves on to face second-seeded Concorida Moorhead on Thursday with a 19-7 record.
St. Catherine 70, Hamline 65
Lydia Lecher scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half and overtime periods. This included a layup with 00:50 left in regulation that gave Hamline a 53-50 lead before St. Catherine's Rachel Randleman answered right back with a three-pointer that tied things 53-53 with 00:25 left.Â
Lecher scored the first, and last points of the first overtime, as her layup with 00:13 on the clock put things at 60-60.Â
The Pipers led for most of the second overtime, with their largest cushion being 63-60 off Sophie Stork's three-pointer with 3:30 on the clock. Those were Hamline's final points of the season, as St. Catherine ended the game with a 7-0 run that iced them a 70-65 victory.
Lecher had 21 points and seven rebounds in her final collegiate game, while Yasmeen Abed had 10 points off the bench. Faith Johnson had a game-high eight rebounds and three steals for Hamline.
The Wildcats' entire starting five had double figures, led by Hattie Fox's 16.
