Pipers Split With Storm

INDIANOLA, IOWA.—The Hamline University baseball team's first true road games of the 2024 season pitted them against Simpson (DH) in Indianola, Iowa on Saturday afternoon. The Pipers settled for a Saturday split with a 10-0 loss (8 innings) in game one, followed by a 6-3 win in game two. 

Hamline moves to 5-3 following the split, while Simpson exits Saturday with a 3-2 record.

Simpson 10, Hamline 0 (8 innings)

A seven-run fifth inning, and a three-run eighth secured the Storm a 10-0 victory over the Pipers.

Mac Enlow's 3-for-3 performance, and Cade McGraw's 1-for-3 outing made up all of Hamline's four hits compared to Simpson's 12. 

Conor Mestemacher notched four strikeouts and allowed two hits, three runs, and three walks over 4 1/2 innings pitched for the Pipers before Dalton Maxwell and Luke Schmaedeke came in relief. 

The Storm offense was led by Cagley's 3-for-3 outing that included a double, RBI, and one run scored.

Hamline 6, Simpson 3

Hamline's offense scored runs in each of the innings that Simpson committed at least one error. This included an eighth inning that resulted in four Storm errors, which helped the Pipers break a 3-3 tie with a three-run frame that secured them a 6-3 victory.

Simpson finished the game with six errors.

Jacob Barmore was the lone multi-hit Piper with a 2-for-5 outing that resulted in two runs scored. Tyler Johnson's two-run home run in the third inning made up his 1-for-5 outing. Hamline accumulated six hits against Simpson's nine. Caden Erickson, Enlow, and Colin Schuetz also recorded hits for the Pipers.

Parker Leipzig notched six strikeouts and allowed seven hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings on the pitching rubber. Hans Christensen V got the winning decision in relief, as he tallied five strikeouts and allowed two hits over the final 3 1/3 frames for the Pipers.

Hamline will close their three-game series at Simpson with a single nine inning bout tomorrow, Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m.
