Pipers Open MIAC Play With Losses to Cardinals

WINONA, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team opened MIAC play with two road losses at Saint Mary's by scores of 1-0 and 7-2.

The Pipers fall to 7-12, 0-2 MIAC, while the Cardinals improve to 8-7, 2-0 MIAC.

Saint Mary's 1, Hamline 0 (Game One)

Both offenses combined for just four hits in the contest. Tyler Johnson's first-inning infield single was Hamline's lone hit of the contest. 

The Cardinals scored the game's lone run in the fourth inning. Ryan Csida led off with an infield single before he moved to second on Cameron Weber's sacrifice bunt. Csida scored from second base on Mason Coyle's single that made the score 1-0.

Csida paced Saint Mary's at the plate with a 2-fo-3 outing along with a stolen base.

Hamline starting pitcher Conor Mestemacher posted seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings of work. Josh Cary allowed just one hit, no runs, and notched two strikeouts in the final 1 1/3 innings.

Cardinals pitcher Addison Hoschevar allowed jusr one hit, one walk, and notched five strikeouts over seven complete innings.

Saint Mary's 7, Hamline 2 (Game Two)

Hamline set the tone with back-to-back singles from Max Gerstner and Caden Erickson. Gerstner reached third on Erickson's hit, and scored off Tyler Johnson's sacrifice fly that made it 1-0.

That proved to be Hamline's lone lead of the game. Saint Mary's responded with a first-inning run that tied it up 1-1 before their four-run third inning gave them enough cushion in a 7-2 victory over the Pipers.

Hamline's other run occurred in the sixth inning, when Erickson led off with a hit by pitch before he scored off Finn Melchior's double that narrowed the score to 6-2.

Saint Mary's outhit Hamline 10-5. 

Erickson and Gerstner each had two hits with a run scored. Cade McGraw went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch, while Melchior's double highlighted his 1-for-4 game. 

Parker Leipzig, Dalton Maxwell, and Hans Christensen V all pitched for the Pipers. 

Hamline will open MIAC play at CHS Field on Wednesday, April 3 against Macalester (DH). Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
