DULUTH, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team split a pair of games at St. Scholastica (DH), losing game one 2-1 before winning game three 3-1.
The Pipers move to 12-17, 4-6 MIAC, while the Saints end the day with a 16-10, 5-7 MIAC record.
St. Scholastica 2, Hamline 1 (Game One)
Pipers starting pitcher Hans Christensen V had a solid outing on the mound. He allowed seven hits, two runs, and notched four strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Both those runs occurred off a first-inning sacrifice fly, and an RBI single in the fifth frame.Â
Sandwiched between those plays was Hamline's lone run of the game in the fourth inning, where Max Gerstner led off with a double and later scored off Finn Melchior's double.
Caden Erickson and Jacob Barmore also each had a hit for the Pipers, who were out hit by the Saints 7-4.
Kyle Oswald carried the Saints on his shoulders with a 3-for-4 outing along with two runs scored.
Hamline 3, St. Scholastica 1 (Game Two)
Conor Mestemacher notched four strikeouts and allowed one run (none earned), and three hits over 5 2/3 innings before Josh Cary pitched the game of his life in relief. Cary allowed no hits, just two walks, and tallied four strikeouts in a 3 1/3 inning save.
The Piper offense tacked on a run in the first, second, and third innings. Gerstner led off the game with a walk, stole two bases, and scored from third on a wild pitch to give Hamline a 1-0 lead. The Saints responded with a run in the bottom half of the opening frame off a Piper throwing error, which made the score 1-1.
Braeden Bourne walked, and gave Hamline a 2-1 lead off Barmore's double in the second frame. The third inning saw Tyler Johnson reach on an error, and widen the margin to 3-1 off Mac Enlow's single.
Melchior, Nick Zezulka, and Barmore each went 1-for-4 with a double. Gerstner, who drew two walks, was 1-for-3 with a double.
The Pipers will make the short trip to Bethel (DH) on Saturday, April 20. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
