Pipers Fall to Sabres, Defeat Knights on Day One of UW-Superior Tournament

SUPERIOR, WIS.—The Hamline University women's volleyball team split a pair of games on day one of the UW-Superior Subway Stinger Tournament on Friday evening as they dropped a 3-1 decision to Marian, and came back with a 3-1 victory over Martin Luther.

The Pipers exit Friday with a 2-4 record.

Hamline 3, Marian 1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 26-24)

A whopping five lead changes occurred in set one as Hamline's latest lead was 19-18 before they committed a combined six errors down the stretch. This gave Marian a 7-2 run at the end, which secured them a 25-21 victory.

The Pipers came back with a 25-21 victory of their own in set two, where they came back from a 20-18 deficit with a 7-1 run. Two kills apiece from Lindsay Eckelman and Riley Melby engineered that run at the tail end, which tied the match 1-1.

The Sabres led from start-to-finish in a 25-17 victory in set three.

The fourth frame resulted in five lead changes. Riley Melby's fourth and final kill of the set gave Hamline a 22-21 lead. That was followed by three-straight Piper attack errors that put Marian at match point with a 24-22 lead. Melby and Grace Bathurst each responded with a kill for the Pipers, which knotted the score 24-24. That's all Hamline mustered as they committed a service error before Marian iced a 26-24 win behind Riley Shores' kill.

Grace Bathurst led Hamline with 12 kills and three blocks in her collegiate debut, followed by 11 kills from Melby. Jenna Rubbelke had a game-high 24 digs for the Pipers, while Lauren Wilborn had 17. Kaitlyn Kotek and Cameryn Sand ran the offense with 16 and 13 assists, respectively.

The Pipers hit .072 against the Sabres' .110 mark.

Hamline 3, Martin Luther 1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19)

Hamline led from start-to-finish in a 25-12 set-one victory, highlighted by five Wilborn kills and a .387 team hitting percentage.

Six lead changes took place in set two, where Hamline led 21-20 behind four team service aces and four kills from Grace Bathurst. Martin Luther ended the frame with a 5-0 run behind a combined three Piper errors, and one kill apiece from Lydia Feidt and Madeline Romsdahl. That sealed them a 25-21 victory, which tied the match 1-1.

Five Wilborn kills highlighted the Pipers in set three, where they never surrendered a lead en route to a 25-17 victory.

Wilborn kept that momentum going in the fourth set, as her seven kills in the frame helped dig the Pipers out of a 7-2 hole and eventually took the lead for good 10-9, and cruised from there to lock a 25-19 win.
