SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The No. 13 Hamline University women's hockey team surrendered four unanswered goals in a 5-3 loss to St. Olaf at TRIA Rink Thursday night.
The Pipers fall to 10-4, 5-1 MIAC, while the Oles improve to 5-8-1, 2-4-1 MIAC.
St. Olaf 5, Hamline 3
Hamline controlled the early offensive action, with multiple missed and blocked shots, including attempts by
Ashley Grabau and
Cailey McLaughlin. A significant moment occurred at 12:03 when
Annika Lindgren scored the only goal of the first period for Hamline, assisted by
Rachel Robbins. The period ended with Hamline leading 1-0 after successfully defending against a late power play by St. Olaf following a penalty on
Annabel Mehta.
The second period began with St. Olaf's Gianna Kowalkoski scoring at 1:33, assisted by Reese Swanson and Bella LaMere, tying the game 1-1. The Pipers responded quickly with
Ashlyn Abrahamson scoring at 1:42, assisted by
Nikki Olund, to make the score 2-1. Hamline's
Iyla Ryskamp then extended their lead to 3-1 at 6:20 with a goal assisted by
Haley Eder-Zdechlik. St. Olaf, however, rallied late in the period with goals from Andi Huselid at 17:25 and Solvei Berg-Messerole at 18:20, leveling the score at 3-3 by the end of the period.
The third period began with the Oles taking control early as Bella LaMere scored at 1:34, assisted by Solvei Berg-Messerole and MaKenna Beaver, increasing their lead to 4-3. Despite numerous shot attempts by Hamline, including a power play opportunity following a hooking penalty on Julia Larson of St. Olaf, they were unable to find the back of the net. St. Olaf sealed their victory with a goal from Bryn Etzell at 17:11 assisted again by Beaver. The Pipers made a late push by pulling their goalie, but St. Olaf's defense, led by goalie Hannah Fritz, held firm to secure the 5-3 win.
Iyla Ryskamp led the Pipers with a goal and six shots, demonstrating offensive activity.
Annika Lindgren also scored a goal for Hamline.
Ashlyn Abrahamson joins the scoring leaders with one goal on five shots. Notably,
Nikki Olund exceled in faceoffs, winning 87% of her 16 attempts. Additionally,
Kendra Nordick, made 24 saves in her start, though she conceded five goals.
Bella LaMere made a significant impact with her offensive contributions, registering one goal, one assist, and a game-winning goal, making her a key player in crucial moments. Bryn Etzell also contributed offensively with one goal and maintained a strong plus-minus of two, highlighting her effective play on both ends of the ice. MaKenna Beaver has been a reliable playmaker, leading the team with two assists, contributing to her overall point total. Rachel Wieland excelled in faceoffs, achieving a win percentage of 63, demonstrating her effectiveness in controlling puck possession. Lastly, Solvei Berg-Messerole showcased her versatility with one goal and one assist, alongside maintaining a plus-minus of two, underlining her balanced performance in both offensive and defensive areas. Hannah Fritz stopped 35 shots in net for the Oles.
The Pipers will travel to St. Olaf on Saturday, January 18. Game time is at 2 p.m.
