Pipers Open Weekend Series With Demolition of Bennies

SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The Hamline University women's hockey team defeated Saint Benedict 7-3 at TRIA Rink on Saturday, which snapped a four-game losing skid. Fifth-year forward Emme Nelson played in her 100th career game for Hamline.

The Pipers improve to 11-7-0, 6-5-0 MIAC, while the Bennies fall to 9-6-3, 6-4-1 MIAC.

The opening frame resulted in a combined four goals. Hamline took an early 1-0 lead courtesy of Annabel Mehta at 6:52, assisted by Averie Martin and Cailey McLaughlin. They extended their advantage to 2-0 with a power-play tally from McLaughlin at 8:27, aided by Haley Eder-Zdechlik and Ashlyn Abrahamson. The Bennies responded with Ava Stinnett scoring at 11:08 to cut their deficit to 2-1, but the Pipers quickly countered with an unassisted tally by Abigail Chamernick at 11:58, concluding the period with a 3-1 cushion. The period saw multiple missed shots, with Hamline consistently testing CSB's goalie, Kate Moffat, who recorded several saves.

The second period began with Hamline securing the first faceoff and maintaining control early in the frame. At 3:24, Iyla Ryskamp scored an even-strength goal for Hamline, assisted by Haley Eder-Zdechlik, extending their lead to 4-1. A few minutes later, at 10:58, the Bennies' Aurora Opsahl capitalized on a power play opportunity to cut Hamline's lead in half to 4-2. Throughout the frame, both teams traded shots, with several missed and blocked attempts, while the Pipers successfully defended another power play late in the period.

The third period, which ended with a combined four goals, began with the Pipers maintaining an offensive advantage, winning early faceoffs and capitalizing on a power play with a goal by Abigail Chamernick at 2:39, assisted by Erika Broten bringing the score to 5-2. CSB responded with a goal from Shae Stinnett at 8:32 to narrow the gap to 5-3. However, Hamline continued to extend their lead with another power-play goal by Ashlyn Abrahamson at 12:39, assisted by Haley Eder-Zdechlik. The frame concluded with the Pipers securing a comfortable advantage through an even-strength goal by Calie Peterson at 18:46, assisted by Averie Martin and Ashley Grabau, finishing the game with a 7-3 victory.
Abigail Chamernick stood out with two goals for the Pipers, which included a power-play tally. Iyla Ryskamp was notable for a game-winning goal and a faceoff win percentage of 66%. Ashlyn Abrahamson added depth with a power-play tally, and one assist while leading with a 75% faceoff win rate. Nikki Olund excelled in faceoffs with a 71% win rate, while Haley Eder-Zdechlik led in assists with three. Kendra Nordick stopped 17 shots in net for Hamline, who out shot Saint Benedict 43-20 and finished 3-of-6 on the power play.

Aurora Opsahl was a key contributor for Saint Benedict, registering a power-play goal. Ava Stinnett also made an impact with one goal and maintained a faceoff win percentage of 50 percent. Similarly, Shae Stinnett scored one goal, contributing to the team's efforts. Camryn Hargreaves led the team in assists with two. In goal, Kate Moffat made 26 saves.

The Pipers will look to sweep the Bennies in St. Joseph, Minnesota tomorrow, Saturday, February 1 at 6 p.m.
