Pipers Achieve Multiple Benchmarks in Road Domination of Knights

NORTHFIELD, MINN.--The Hamline University women's basketball team defeated Carleton 75-48 on the road Wednesday night. This victory marked the Pipers' seventh win in their last nine match-ups against the Knights, showcasing their recent dominance in this rivalry. Hamline's 22 assists in the game were the most since December 3, 2011, when they had 24 in a 106-100 OT win over St. Catherine. That's not all, their 16 three-point field goals made set a record for the most in a single game in the 21st century.

The Pipers improve to 8-4, 3-2 MIAC, while the Knights fall to 2-10, 1-4 MIAC.

Hamline 75, Carleton 48

The Pipers started strong with Yasmeen Abed scoring the first points on a layup, assisted by Anna Rynkiewich. The visiting team took an early 4-0 lead after another jumper by Rynkiewich. The Knights responded with Selma Vangstein's layup, and Liesl McCallum played a pivotal role with two consecutive layups to tie the game at 10-10 with 4:53 left in the first quarter. Sophie Stork hit three pointers for the Pipers at the 6:19 and 5:10 marks, but McCallum's continuous scoring, including two free throws in the final minute, helped the Knights finish the quarter leading 18-14. Both teams showed defensive strength, with Hamline recording six steals and Carleton blocking two shots in the frame.

In the second quarter, the Pipers took control with a 30-5 run over the Knights. Camille Cummings opened the scoring for Hamline with a three-pointer at 9:25. Kate Trachsel and Cummings both contributed to the scoring streak, with Trachsel adding a 3-pointer at 8:59 and Cummings hitting another at 6:55. The Pipers' defense was effective, forcing several turnovers, including a steal by Sophie Stork with 00:53 on the clock that led to a three-pointer by Lauren Cooper at 00:47, which widened the score to 44-21. The Knights struggled offensively, missing several layups and committing multiple turnovers, which helped seal the Pipers a 44-23 halftime lead.

Hamline outscored Carleton 16-14 in the third frame, with Marina LaFreniere initiating the scoring with a layup at the start. Carleton's Addy Huss then responded, contributing significantly with a layup and a 3-pointer. Sophie Stork and Camille Cummings each made a crucial 3-pointer for the Pipers, extending their lead. In the closing minutes, Aliyah Wensel secured Hamline's advantage with a 3-pointer, helping maintain a 60-37 cushion heading into the final 10:00.

In the fourth quarter, the Pipers outscored the Knights 15-11, maintaining a steady advantage throughout. Liesl McCallum of Carleton opened the scoring with a layup at 9:19, but Camille Cummings responded with a three-pointer for Hamline at 7:56, assisted by Marina LaFreniere, that made the score 63-39. The Pipers capitalized on turnovers, with Josie Wiebusch scoring a layup and Cummings adding a jumper shortly after. The Knights' Addy Huss contributed with free throws, but Hamline's Lauren Cooper and Aliyah Wensel each hit 3-pointers in the final minutes to solidify the 75-48 victory. 
Camille Cummings led the Pipers with a career-high 25 points, hitting 9-of-13 field goals and 6-of-9 three pointers. Sophie Stork contributed significantly with 13 points, making 5-of-14 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and grabbing five steals. Lauren Cooper added nine points, making 3-of-5 three-point attempts, along with three assists. Aliyah Wensel and Yasmeen Abed both played well defensively, each recording two steals. Josie Wiebusch also made an impact with four steals and led the team with five assists. 

As a team, Hamline shot .516 (16-of-31) from beyond the arc and .439 (29-of-66) from the field. Carleton finished with 28 turnovers and shot .182 (2-of-11) from the three-point line and .391 (18-of-46) from the field.

Liesl McCallum led the Knights with 19 points, making eight-of-12 field goals and securing nine rebounds. Selma Vangstein made an impact with five assists, two steals, four points, and two rebounds. Addy Huss scored 14 points, shooting four-for-14 from the field and achieving a perfect five-for-five from the free-throw line while also recording eight rebounds.

The Pipers will host Augsburg at Hutton Arena on Saturday, January 11 at 3 p.m.
