Pipers Fall To Cardinals 3-1 On The Road

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota (9-10, 2-2 MIAC) overcame the Hamline University volleyball team (7-8, 2-3 MIAC) in a four-set conference match on Friday night at Saint Mary's Gymnasium, winning 25-16, 25-19, 25-27, 25-15.

Saint Mary's took control of the first set with a decisive serving performance, recording five service aces, including two from Claire Kaups, which propelled them to a 25-16 victory over the Pipers. Despite a strong showing from Sophia Johnson, who managed several successful kills for the Pipers, the visitors were unable to overcome the home team's efficient attack and service game.

Saint Mary's capitalized on a series of Hamline errors to take control of the second set, ultimately winning 25-19. Despite Hamline's efforts with Grace Bathurst and Lexi Helmin contributing crucial points, the Cardinals maintained their lead throughout the set.

Hamline edged the Cardinals in a tense third set, 27-25, capitalizing on five service aces, including a pivotal one by Campbell Sims to close the set. The Pipers' blocking was instrumental, as Kayli Starkey and Grace Bathurst combined for key blocks that turned the tide mid-set. Despite a series of errors that allowed Saint Mary's to keep the score close, Hamline's offensive pressure, led by Bathurst with multiple kills, ultimately secured the set victory.

In the fourth set, the Cardinals capitalized on a strong offensive performance to secure a 25-15 win against the Pipers. Despite Hamline's efforts, including a trio of service aces by Bathurst that briefly narrowed the gap, the Cardinals maintained their lead.

Grace Bathurst led Hamline with 13 kills on 22 attempts, posting a .500 hitting percentage and contributing three service aces for a total of 17 points. Cameryn Sand directed the offense with 40 assists, while also adding 15 digs on defense. Lexi Helmin recorded 12 kills on 27 swings, hitting .370, and was involved in two blocks. Sophia Johnson finished with 10 kills and one block, accumulating 11 points in the match.

The Pipers will be back in action on Wednesday, October 15 across the metro in Minneapolis at Augsburg to take on the Auggies at 7 PM.
