Pipers Battles Hard But Fall To Bethel

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline volleyball team fell to Bethel University in straight sets, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23, in a closely contested matchup at Hutton Arena on Friday. The Pipers recorded eight blocks, but it was not enough to overcome Bethel's efficient attack.

Bethel University (MN) edged out Hamline in a closely contested first set, prevailing 25-23. Bethel's early 3-0 lead was fueled by Peyton Howie's two kills, setting the tone for a back-and-forth battle. Hamline responded with a strong showing from Lexi Helmin, who registered three kills to tie the score at 10-10. Despite the Pipers' efforts, including six blocks from Grace Bathurst, Bethel capitalized on Hamline's eight attack errors to secure the set.

Hamline started strong in the second set with two early service aces from Bathurst that contributed to a 3-0 lead. Despite maintaining a slim advantage through several service errors by Bethel, Hamline could not sustain the momentum as Bethel capitalized on offensive plays, including crucial kills from Peyton Howie and a pivotal service ace by Lauren Hetfeld. The set concluded with Bethel edging out Hamline 25-23.

Hamline initially built momentum in the third set with strong plays from Cameryn Sand, who contributed two assists and a kill, helping secure an early 9-7 lead. Despite service aces from Mandy Dierks and Campbell Sims, pressure from Bethel's Howie, who registered multiple kills, allowed the visitors to close the gap. The Pipers' attack errors in the closing moments proved costly, as Bethel rallied to close the set 25-23.

Bathurst led the Pipers with 10 kills and a .444 hitting percentage, contributing significantly to her total of 15.5 points. Dierks was notable on defense, recording 21 digs over the match. Sand facilitated the offense with 31 assists, showing precision in setting. Helmin added 10 kills and three blocks, rounding out a strong performance for the team.

The Pipers compete at the Carleton Triangular Saturday, October 25th where they will take on Carleton in conference play at 12 PM and UW-La Crosse in a non-conference match up at 2 PM.
