Cummings Leads Pipers in 56-27 Win Against Yellowjackets

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The Hamline University basketball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 56-27, on Saturday, capitalizing on 21 points off turnovers to secure the decisive win.

The game commenced with Camille Cummings leading the charge for the Pipers, scoring the first points with a three-pointer at 9:14 and following it up with a layup at 8:55. Cummings also contributed two free throws at 6:56 and 6:55, helping establish an early lead. The Yellowjackets' Elsa Olson responded with a layup at 6:47, but the Pipers maintained control with additional points from Emma Lamppa and Lauren Cooper, who hit a three-pointer at 3:41. Despite Kylee Hewitt's efforts for the Yellowjackets, including a jumper at 1:15, the Pipers finished the first quarter ahead, 15-8, capitalizing on turnovers and proficient free-throw shooting. 

Hamline opened the second quarter with a strong defensive display, forcing nine turnovers from the Yellowjackets. Josie Schmidt capitalized on a fast break with a layup at 8:47, initiating a scoring run for the Pipers. Cummings contributed significantly with two successful three-pointers, the first at 8:10, assisted by Taylor Klement, and another at 5:05. The Pipers' defensive pressure continued as Sophie Stork and Lauren Cooper each recorded steals, while Marina LaFreniere added two layups, including one at 0:29. The quarter concluded with Cooper sinking a three-pointer at the buzzer, pushing Hamline's lead to 32-14.

Stork started the third quarter for the Pipers with a three-pointer at 9:27, assisted by Cummings, setting the tone for a strong quarter. Cooper added two free throws to extend the lead, and LaFreniere contributed with a layup and a defensive rebound shortly after. Cummings also hit a three-pointer at 7:09, assisted by Josie Wiebusch, furthering the Pipers' advantage. Despite turnovers from both teams, the Pipers maintained control, ending the quarter with LaFreniere scoring the final basket, securing a 46-18 lead over the Yellowjackets.

In the fourth quarter, the Pipers maintained their lead against their opponents, showcasing a strong defensive performance and strategic plays. Megan Schafer of the Yellowjackets opened the scoring with a three-pointer assisted by Maddie Reott at 9:09. Evelyn Wiltrout and Klement responded for the Pipers with consecutive layups, extending their lead to 50-21. Ava Nebben added to the momentum with a three-pointer at 6:49, assisted by Klement. Despite a late three-pointer by Dakota Soltis for the Yellowjackets at 1:14, the Pipers secured the quarter with a final free throw from Taylor Starks, sealing the 56-27 victory.

Cummings led the team by scoring 20 points, including four 3-pointers, and made both her free throw attempts. Cooper added eight points and recorded three steals. Schmidt contributed with four points while also collecting two steals and one block. Stork tallied three points and matched Cooper with two steals in the game.

The Pipers head to New Ulm, Minn. next to take on Martin Luther College on Wednesday, November 19 with tipoff beginning at 5:30 PM.
