Pipers Control Game Flow In 73-52 Win Over Macalester

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline (4-2, 1-1 MIAC) defeated Macalester College (1-7, 0-2 MIAC), 73-52, at Hutton Arena, securing the win with a 38-24 advantage in rebounds. The Pipers capitalized on turnovers, scoring 23 points off Macalester's errors.

The contest began with Macalester's Sydnee Smith scoring on a fast-break layup, giving the visitors an early lead. However, Hamline responded with a 9-0 run, highlighted by Lauren Cooper's jumper and a series of layups from Anna Rynkiewich, who scored three consecutive baskets. Hamline's defense forced eight turnovers in the quarter, allowing them to control the pace. Sophie Stork's late layup extended Hamline's advantage, although Emma Karlin's three-pointer for Macalester cut the deficit to 18-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Hamline extended their lead with a 22-12 scoring advantage in the second quarter. Evelyn Wiltrout contributed significantly by hitting a layup and a three-pointer early on, assisted by Rynkiewich. Cooper scored a pair of consecutive layups and assisted Emma Lamppa for a three-pointer at 3:26. The quarter concluded with Cooper sinking a three-pointer at the buzzer, assisted by Wiltrout, putting Hamline ahead 40-20 at halftime.

Hamline maintained a steady lead in the third quarter, finishing with a narrow 14-13 scoring advantage over Macalester. Camille Cummings contributed significantly for the Pipers, hitting two free throws at 9:02 and a three-pointer at 1:26, helping to extend their lead. Smith of Macalester was active early, scoring a layup at 8:43 following her own steal. Despite Macalester's attempts to close the gap, Hamline's defense, which included two steals, held firm, allowing them to end the quarter ahead, 54-33.

The fourth quarter saw Hamline and Macalester tied in scoring, each adding 19 points. Hamline's Lamppa hit two pivotal three-pointers, including one at 6:28 that helped maintain their lead. Cooper contributed with two early free throws, bringing Hamline's score to 56, while Taylor Starks added a layup and a jumper, boosting the team's total. Macalester's Megan Matthews was solid, scoring both a layup and a three-pointer, but the visitors couldn't close the gap, concluding the quarter with a 73-52 loss to the Pipers.

Cooper scored 13 points and collected three steals, showcasing her efficiency by hitting 5 of 8 shots. Lamppa added 12 points, converting 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. Cummings contributed 11 points and made 6 of 8 free throws. Josie Schmidt recorded two steals and provided three assists, complementing her five rebounds.

The Pipers head on the road to take on Saint Mary's on Wednesday, December 10 in Winona, with tipoff at 7 PM.
