ST. PETER, MINN.--The No. 3 seed Hamline University women's hockey team fell to No. 3 seed/No. 4 ranked Gustavus Adolphus 4-0 in the MIAC Tournament Semifinal on Saturday in Saint Peter, Minnesota.
The Pipers conclude their 2024-25 season with a 16-10-0 record, while the Gusties will advance to the MIAC Tournament Championship Game with a 21-5-0 mark. This game marked the No. 3 seed Pipers' eighth-straight, and 10th overall appearance in the MIAC Tournament, highlighting their consistent presence in the event.
Gustavus 4, Hamline 0
In the first period, Hamline's offensive efforts were marked by several attempts on goal, with
Annabel Mehta,
Erika Broten, and
Iyla Ryskamp each making shots within the first two minutes, though all were saved by the Gusties' goalie Lily Timmons. The period saw a series of defensive plays by the Pipers, including blocked shots by
Morgan Wohlers and
Erika Broten, contributing to a solid defensive stance. Despite these efforts, the Gusties scored the only goal of the period at 4:54 with Lily Mortenson finding the net, assisted by Kaitlyn Holland and Eva Nelson, leading to a 1-0 score in favor of the home team.
In the second period, Hamline's offensive efforts were marked by multiple shot attempts, including those by
Nikki Olund and
Averie Martin, with Olund's faceoff win at 14:41 being a key moment. Despite numerous attempts, the Pipers was unable to convert, and the Gusties capitalized at 16:21 with a goal by Noelle Hemr, assisted by Kaitlyn Holland and Eva Nelson.
Kendra Nordick provided several crucial saves throughout the period, facing persistent pressure from the Gusties, particularly during their power play.
In the third period, Hamline's
Emme Nelson won the opening faceoff against Lily Mortenson, setting the tone for early possession. Despite several shots by
Morgan Wohlers and
Iyla Ryskamp, Hamline faced strong defensive plays, with multiple saves by Lily Timmons of the Gusties. A notable moment occurred at 4:42 when Ryskamp was penalized for roughing, resulting in a power play for Gustavus. The Pipers responded with a power play of their own at 7:43, following a penalty on Brooke Power of the Gusties. However, the Gusties secured their lead with two empty net goals by Brooke Power in the final minutes, ending the period with a score of 4-0 in favor of Gustavus.
Ashlyn Abrahamson stood out on the Hamline team with a faceoff win percentage of 60, having won 3-of-5 faceoffs.
Erika Broten contributed significantly in defense, leading the team with three blocked shots, and recorded a goal and an assist.
Emme Nelson exceled in faceoffs with an impressive 62 percent win rate, securing 10-of-16 attempts. Goalie
Kendra Nordick has made an impact in goal, recording 20 saves in her appearance, despite a two-goal against performance.
Lily Mortenson was a standout for the Gusties, scoring one goal which was a game-winner and contributing a plus-minus of three. She also excelled in faceoffs, winning 67 percent of them. Brooke Power contributed two goals, leading the team in goals scored. Kylie Scott was effective in playmaking with two assists, while Eva Nelson recorded two assists and led the team with a plus-minus of four. In goal, Lily Timmons had an impressive performance, making 17 saves without allowing a goal. Gustavus out shot Hamline 24-17.
