Pipers Close Spring Trip with a Split

CLERMONT, FLA.--The Hamline University softball team faced two contrasting outcomes on Sunday in Clermont, Florida. They achieved a confident victory over Union College (N.Y.) 15-5, but were later defeated by Lewis & Clark, who triumphed with a score of 13-1.

The Pipers exit the spring trip with a 9-7 record. Union falls to 0-3, while Lewis & Clark remains undefeated at 14-0.

Hamline 15, Union 5 (Game One)

In the game against Union, Hamline quickly established dominance in the first inning, scoring four runs. Mikenna Johnson walked, leading to a sequence of hits and aggressive base running. Savannah Johnson contributed a key two-RBI single, bringing in Mikenna Johnson and Elena Martinez, while Jenna Rubbelke scored on a wild pitch. Abigail Chamernick followed with an RBI single, bringing the inning total to four runs. By the second inning, Hamline capitalized on Union's defensive errors, leading to two more runs and a score of 6-3.

The Pipers surged again in the fifth inning. Mikenna Johnson started the momentum with a single, followed by hits from Elena Martinez and Jenna Rubbelke. With the bases loaded, Lainey Wier walked to score Mikenna Johnson, and Madisen Borek's RBI single, along with an error, allowed the team to score three runs, extending the lead to 11-5. A strong sixth inning solidified their victory, with Mikenna Johnson doubling and Abbey Herbert clearing the bases with a pinch-hit double, finishing the game with a decisive 15-5 win.

Elena Martinez led Hamline's offensive performance with five hits and three runs. Savannah Johnson added three RBIs and a walk, while Madisen Borek contributed three RBIs and one hit. Abbey Herbert, as a pinch hitter, achieved a double and three RBIs in her only at-bat. On the pitching side, Natalee Boelk pitched four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, while Montana Miller provided two innings of relief without allowing any runs, securing a save.

Lewis & Clark 13, Hamline 1 (6 innings) (Game Two)

In contrast, the game against Lewis & Clark saw Hamline struggle defensively. The Pioneers took an early lead with two unearned runs in the first inning. Gina Ozuna capitalized on an error, scoring on a single by Mari Alvarez, and later, Harper Campanelli drove in Sam Gildersle with another single. Although Hamline responded in the third inning with a run from Maddie Johnson, who was driven home by Jenna Rubbelke's single, the Pioneers had already extended their lead to 5-1 thanks to a two-run homer by Sam Gildersle.

The Pioneers continued to dominate, extending their lead to 8-1 in the fifth inning and ultimately scoring five more runs in the sixth, ending the game at 13-1. Jenna Rubbelke stood out for Hamline, achieving a .500 batting average with one RBI. Maddie Johnson also contributed with one hit, one run, and a stolen base. On the pitching front, Montana Miller tossed 2 1/3 innings with no earned runs, while Allison Boynton and Dana Rosbacka allowed a combined 13 runs.

Lewis & Clark's Sam Gildersle and Lacey Marglin shone with standout performances; Gildersle scored three runs and hit a home run, while Marglin recorded two doubles and four RBIs. Charlize Pope pitched a complete game for the Pioneers, allowing just two hits and one earned run over six innings.
