Pipers Drop Game One, Win Game Two Over Saints

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Hamline University softball team experienced a mixed day against St. Scholastica at Meredith Field on Wednesday, suffering a 4-2 defeat in game one before bouncing back to secure a 5-0 victory in game two.

The Pipers move to 13-17, 3-9 MIAC, while the Saints end the day 7-19, 3-7 MIAC.

St. Scholastica 4, Hamline 2 (Game One)

Both teams were scoreless through the first three innings, unable to capitalize on any opportunities. The Saints broke the deadlock in the fourth inning, scoring two runs as Emma Bolin crossed home on a double by Jadyn Lind, followed by Victoria Nelson's RBI single, giving St. Scholastica a 2-0 lead. Hamline responded with an offensive push in the fifth inning, starting with Josephine Cariveau reaching first on an error, followed by Gabby Tuhy's single. Elena Martinez bunted for a single, bringing in Cariveau for an unearned run, and Maddie Johnson's single allowed Tuhy to score, leveling the game at 2-2.

However, the Saints regained their lead in the sixth inning with two more runs. Samantha Paniagua doubled, and Katelyn Hackman drove her in with a single, followed by Nelson's RBI single, bringing the score to 4-2. Despite the Pipers' efforts, they were unable to score in the bottom of the sixth or seventh innings, concluding the game with the Saints securing a 4-2 victory.

Defensively for Hamline, Jenna Rubbelke led with four assists at shortstop, while Savannah Johnson contributed with two putouts at first base. Cariveau was effective at third base with five assists and two putouts. Tuhy added to the defensive effort with four assists and two putouts at second base. On the mound, Dana Rosbacka pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs on eight hits over seven innings, striking out three batters.

Hamline 5, St. Scholastica 0 (Game Two)

Hamline established early momentum, scoring three runs in the first two innings. A wild pitch allowed Elena Martinez to score, followed by Savannah Johnson driving in Jenna Rubbelke with a single, propelling the Pipers to a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Gabby Tuhy singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Maddie Johnson, and scored on a groundout by Mikenna Johnson, extending the lead to 3-0.

The Pipers continued to build their lead in the fourth inning when Josephine Cariveau, who walked earlier and stole second, scored an unearned run due to a fielding error, making it 4-0. The fifth inning saw Savannah Johnson walk and eventually score on a single from Gabby Tuhy, increasing the lead to 5-0. Throughout the game, Hamline's defense held firm, preventing the Saints from scoring, ultimately concluding with a 5-0 victory.

Elena Martinez and Savannah Johnson were key players for Hamline, with Martinez leading in stolen bases (two attempts) and contributing one hit and one run scored. Johnson had a strong game with two hits, one run, and one RBI. Rubbelke also delivered a notable performance with two hits and one run scored. On the mound, Allison Boynton pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out three batters.

St. Scholastica's efforts were highlighted by Katelyn Hackman, who went 2-for-3 and contributed defensively with two assists. Samantha Paniagua and Victoria Nelson also made contributions at the plate, each recording one hit. On the mound, Ashley Matejka and Lindsey Ewer combined for 6 2/3 innings, struggling against Hamline's offense, which showcased efficient hitting and solid defensive play.

The Pipers will host St. Olaf (DH) at Meredith Field on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
