SAINT PAUL, MINN.--St. Olaf defeated the Hamline Univesity baseball team in two matchups at CHS Field in St. Paul on Sunday, with scores of 10-1 and 10-6, respectively.
The Pipers fall to 5-15, 0-2 MIAC, while the Oles improve to 13-5, 5-0 MIAC.
Hamline 10, St. Olaf 1 (Game One)
St. Olaf opened the scoring in the second inning when Frank Lavin hit a solo home run. They added two more runs in the inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Evan Hammonds, taking a 3-0 lead. The Oles extended their advantage in the third with another three runs, starting with Breckin Hadley's double followed by Lavin's RBI single. Cole Pleimann then hit a two-run homer, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Hamline got on the board in the fourth inning when
Kyle Vanek doubled and scored on a
Jack Rheineck single, making it 7-1 after four innings. The Oles made it 8-1 in the fifth with an RBI double by Hammonds and added two more runs in the seventh through a sacrifice fly by Hammonds and an RBI single from Mason Buck, closing the game at 10-1.
Ryan Burley stood out with a strong defensive performance, recording four assists as the shortstop. Vanek showcased his batting, contributing a double and one run scored.
Tyler Johnson had one hit. On the mound,
Finn Melchior pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, and three earned runs.
Cameron Hickox and
Carter Hoff contributed in relief, allowing three and two earned runs, respectively, while
Ethan Smith and
Teagan Yotter also made appearances.
Lavin excelled with two runs, two hits, three RBIs, and one home run. Pleimann also contributed significantly, scoring two runs and hitting a home run with two RBIs. Christopher Woodside recorded three hits, including a double, and scored two runs. On the mound, Kevin Steel delivered 5 2/3 innings with just one earned run and seven strikeouts, securing a 2-0 win record.
St. Olaf 10, Hamline 6 (Game Two)
This matchup saw Hamline get on the board in the third inning when
Ethan Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by
Caden Erickson, followed by
Finn Melchior's double driving in two more runs, leveling the score at 3–3. Hamline surged again in the sixth inning, with Melchior walking and stealing second, followed by Smith's single bringing in Melchior.
Ryan Burley's single through the left side allowed two more runners to score, giving Hamline a 6–5 lead.
Despite this, the Oles rallied back, tying the game with a solo home run by Henry Black in the eighth. They took control in the tenth inning with a four-run burst, highlighted by Black's second home run of the game and a pivotal single from Pleimann that secured St. Olaf a 10-6 victory.
Melchior had a standout performance for Hamline, recording two hits, including a double, driving in two runs, walking twice, and stealing two bases. Smith excelled with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, one RBI, and a walk. Burley contributed with two RBIs, while Erickson had an RBI and made defensive contributions with two assists at third base.
Parker Leipzig started the game for the Pipers, allowing three earned runs on three hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings, while
Dalton Maxwell and
Hans Christensen V pitched in relief.
Teagan Yotter closed the game, yielding one hit and striking out two batters.
The Oles were led by Black, who recorded two home runs, driving in two runs and scoring four times. Matthew Kulesa contributed with two hits and three RBIs. Evan Hammonds had a notable game with four hits in six at-bats. On the mound, Kieran Haaland pitched 4 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs, earning a win. Pleimann also had a strong day defensively and offensively, contributing two hits and driving in two runs.
The Pipers will travel to Saint John's (DH) on Wednesday, April 9 for a 2:30 p.m. game.
