SAINT PAUL, MINN. – The Hamline University softball team had a mixed day at Macalester on Tuesday, with the Pipers falling 2-0 in the first game before bouncing back with a 5-3 victory in the second.
The Pipers move to 11-11, 1-3 MIAC, while the Scots end the day 15-7, 2-2 MIAC.
Macalester 2, Hamline 0 (Game One)
Macalester secured the victory with both runs scored in the first inning, maintaining their lead throughout the game. The Scots took an early advantage when Safiya Butler doubled, followed by Sophie Futchko hitting another double to bring Butler home. Tess Bojorquez added a single, allowing Futchko to score, leaving the Pipers trailing 2–0 after the first inning.
Hamline managed only one hit in the second inning when
Josephine Cariveau singled to left field, but they were unable to score. The Pipers' defense held firm, preventing any additional runs from the Scots with three quick outs in the second. In the fifth inning, Hamline showed some potential with
Savannah Johnson hitting a single and Cariveau reaching base on a fielder's choice, but they left two runners on base without scoring.
Even with a hit-by-pitch and a couple of hits in the sixth, the Pipers' defense prevented further scoring by Macalester, thanks to key plays at home plate and on the bases.
Allison Boynton delivered a complete game for Hamline, pitching six innings with five strikeouts and allowing only two earned runs. Cariveau contributed with a hit and a stolen base.
Savannah Johnson also made an impact at the plate, recording a hit.
Gabby Tuhy demonstrated defensive skill with three assists and drew a walk to reach base.
Hamline 5, Macalester 3 (Game Two)
In contrast, game two saw Hamline come out on top with a 5-3 victory, scoring four runs in the third inning. The Scots took an early lead in the first inning when Elizabeth Welch singled, allowing Safiya Butler to score. However, the Pipers responded in the third inning with consecutive hits from
Maddie Johnson and
Mikenna Johnson.
Abigail Chamernick then drove in
Maddie Johnson with a single, followed by
Jenna Rubbelke reaching base on a dropped fly, leading to additional runs from
Mikenna Johnson and Chamernick. Cariveau later singled, allowing Rubbelke to score, bringing the Pipers to a 4–2 lead after the third.
Hamline extended their lead in the fifth inning when
Savannah Johnson stole home following a successful sacrifice bunt by
Gabby Tuhy. Macalester attempted to close the gap with a home run from Dylan Tapia in the fifth, but the Pipers' defense held firm, thwarting a seventh-inning rally despite hits from Martha Miller and Alli Johnson.
The Pipers finished with 11 hits. Rubbelke led the Pipers with two stolen bases and contributed significantly in the field with five assists while batting 2-for-3 with one RBI. Chamernick was effective at the plate, recording two hits, one RBI, and one stolen base.
Dana Rosbacka pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs over seven innings, and collecting four assists defensively.
The Scots showcased notable performances in game two, with Alli Johnson and Allison Dvorak each recording four assists and contributing to a double play. Tapia stood out offensively with a home run and one RBI, while Welch contributed with an RBI and a hit. On the pitching side, Tess Bojorquez struck out one and allowed one earned run over 2 1/3 innings, while Paige Schultz threw 4 2/3 innings, recording one strikeout and allowing one earned run.
