Cummings Achieves 1000 Career Points In Win Against Carleton

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline (11-3, 5-2 MIAC) defeated Carleton (5-9, 2-5 MIAC), 63-56, at Hutton Arena, fueled by 17 steals and a 20-point advantage in second-chance points.

The game commenced with Camille Cummings opening the scoring for the Pipers with a jumper in the paint. Josie Wiebusch contributed with a layup, giving the Pipers an early edge. The Knights responded with a three-pointer from Taylor Dente, assisted by Addy Huss, to keep the game close. A series of turnovers by the Knights allowed the Pipers to capitalize, with Josie Schmidt executing a layup off an assist from Anna Rynkiewich. The quarter concluded dramatically as Cummings hit a three-pointer with just nine seconds remaining, assisted by Emma Lamppa, securing an 18-10 advantage for the Pipers. With the first 6 of her 9 points in the first quarter, Camille Cummings became the 15th Piper to hit the 1000 point mark in Hamline women's basketball history.

Hamline maintained their lead throughout the second quarter, matching the Knights' 14-point output. Evelyn Wiltrout gave Hamline an early boost with a layup assisted by Cummings at 8:35. Sophie Stork contributed significantly by hitting back-to-back three-pointers at 3:11 and 2:21, extending the Pipers' lead. The Knights' Liesl McCallum kept the game close with a layup at 1:55, but Wiebusch sealed the quarter for the Pipers with a layup at the 10-second mark, bringing the score to 32-24 in favor of the Pipers as the first half concluded.

In the third quarter, the Pipers expanded their lead over the Knights, finishing with a 21-13 scoring advantage for the quarter. Cummings was pivotal for the Pipers, scoring multiple free throws and a three-pointer, contributing to the home team's momentum. Wiltrout added a layup, and Lamppa also hit a crucial three-pointer at the 2:15 mark. The Knights' McCallum attempted to keep her team in contention with a series of successful shots, including a layup and a free throw, but it was not enough to close the gap. The Pipers' defensive rebounding and consistent free-throw shooting helped maintain their lead into the final quarter.

In the final quarter, the Knights' offense surged with Addy Huss and Audrey Whitney leading scoring efforts, reducing the Pipers' lead. Huss contributed with a layup at 9:44, followed by Whitney's layup at 8:52. Despite the Knights' push, the Pipers maintained their advantage with Lamppa's three-pointer at 4:32, assisted by Wiltrout, extending the home team's lead. Schmidt added crucial points for the Pipers with layups at 3:31 and 2:16, securing the win with a final score of 63-56. The Knights outscored the Pipers 19-10 in the quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Cummings led with 18 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Lamppa contributed with 12 points, all from beyond the arc, converting four three-pointers. Schmidt stood out defensively, recording four steals. Wiebusch was effective on the boards, collecting eight rebounds while also adding three steals.

The Pipers will be back at home this Saturday, January 17 for a 1 PM tipoff against St. Olaf!
