Pipers Split Double Header With Buena Vista

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Pipers split their double header against Buena Vista on Sunday, February 15.

GAME 1
Hamline baseball dropped a high-scoring, back-and-forth contest to Buena Vista, 17-11, in game one of Sunday's doubleheader on Feb. 15.

The Beavers struck first with a big three-run second inning, using three solo home runs to take an early 3-0 lead. Hamline responded immediately in the top of the third, cutting the deficit to one after an RBI single from Grant Peltier and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Jacob Barmore.

The Pipers grabbed momentum in the fourth inning, taking their first lead of the game when Alex Hokenson delivered a two-run single to put Hamline ahead, 4-3. Hamline added another run later in the inning and carried a 5-4 advantage after four.

Hamline's biggest offensive surge came in the sixth, when the Pipers exploded for six runs to build an 11-4 lead. Barmore added another RBI single, and Hamline took advantage of defensive miscues before Owen Giesen cleared the bases with a huge three-run triple, later scoring on an error as part of the six-run inning.

Despite trailing by seven, Buena Vista chipped away and then flipped the game with a massive rally in the bottom of the eighth. The Beavers scored 11 runs in the inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Brandon Jenkins, to turn an 11-6 game into a 17-11 advantage.

Hamline finished with 11 runs on 11 hits, led by Giesen, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a triple and double. Peltier had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Barmore went 2-for-4 with two RBI and also drew a walk. Hokenson added two RBI as well, and Ryan Burley scored twice and doubled.

On the mound, Hamline struck out seven but surrendered seven home runs in the contest as Buena Vista's late power surge proved to be the difference.

With the loss, Hamline moved to 1-1 on the season heading into game two of the doubleheader.

GAME 2

Hamline baseball earned an 11-9 victory over Buena Vista in game one of Sunday's doubleheader on Feb. 15, improving to 2-1 on the season behind a strong offensive performance and clutch late-game pitching.

The Pipers opened the scoring in the second inning when Jack Rheineck doubled into the gap and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Barmore. Hamline added another run in the third, as Stevie Schmitt doubled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Burley, giving the Pipers a 2-0 lead.

Buena Vista answered with a run in the bottom of the third before breaking the game open in the fourth, scoring seven runs to take an 8-2 advantage. Hamline didn't fold, however, and began chipping away immediately. The Pipers scored two runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Maddex Van Slooten and another sacrifice fly from Grant Peltier to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Hamline's biggest surge came in the sixth inning, when the Pipers plated four runs to tie the game at 8-8. Burley delivered a key RBI single, and Hamline took advantage of walks and wild pitches to erase the deficit.

The Pipers regained the lead in the eighth inning with a three-run rally. Rheineck came through with a clutch two-run single, and Barmore added an RBI triple later in the inning to push Hamline's lead to 11-8.
Buena Vista threatened in the ninth and scored one run, but Hamline's bullpen was able to shut the door and secure the win.

Offensively, Hamline totaled 12 hits and was led by Ryan Burley, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Jack Rheineck, who also went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Stevie Schmitt added a strong performance at the plate, finishing 3-for-5, while Jacob Barmore went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

On the mound, Dryden Seeley delivered a key relief outing, throwing 3.1 shutout innings with three strikeouts to keep the Pipers within striking distance and set up the comeback win. Hamline struck out 10 Buena Vista hitters as a staff and held on late to complete the comeback.
