Pipers Can't Hold Off Pomona-Pitzer In Final Spring Break Games

GAME ONE

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Hamline fell to Pomona-Pitzer 9-6 on Saturday at Wig Beach Field. Hamline (2-10) held an early 4-0 lead after the third inning, but Pomona-Pitzer (3-12) surged with a six-run fifth inning to secure the win.

Hamline took an early lead in the third inning, scoring four runs. Natalynn Lundeen singled to left field, followed by Reese Herrig's single through the left side. Lundeen advanced to third on a stolen base and scored on a wild pitch. Mikenna Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, and Elena Martinez singled. Josephine Cariveau then doubled, driving in two runs, and Brennan Reid singled to drive in Cariveau. This inning ended with Hamline leading 4-0.

In the fourth inning, Pomona-Pitzer responded by scoring three runs. Sadie Huryn doubled and scored on Kylie Liu's single. Audrey Reimers and Claire Sefkow contributed with a fielder's choice and a walk, respectively, setting up Natalie Murguia's RBI double. Marie Milton grounded out but brought in another run. The inning concluded with Hamline holding a narrow 4-3 lead.

The fifth inning saw additional scoring from both teams. The Pipers added two runs when Brie Bakke was hit by a pitch and Herrig walked. Johnson's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, and Martinez reached on an error, allowing Bakke to score. Cariveau's fielder's choice brought Herrig home. However, Pomona-Pitzer countered with a six-run inning, highlighted by consecutive singles from Summer Gibson, Yuri Song, and Liu, and a two-RBI single from Milton. At the end of the fifth, Pomona-Pitzer led 9-6.

The game concluded without further scoring, with Pomona-Pitzer securing a 9-6 victory over Hamline.

Cariveau led the team with three RBIs, including a two-run double. Reid contributed with two hits and an RBI, while also making five assists defensively. Herrig scored twice and added a hit and a walk to his offensive performance.

Montana Miller pitched 5 innings, allowing 10 hits and 4 earned runs, while issuing 1 walk and striking out 1 batter. Despite facing 23 batters, Miller managed to pick off one runner and maintained a WHIP of 2.20 in the game. Natalee Boelk came in for relief but struggled, pitching 1 inning and conceding 5 earned runs on 5 hits, resulting in a WHIP of 5.00. Boelk's outing included three groundouts but no strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Hamline (2-12) fell to the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (5-12, 1-2), 9-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Pipers managed to score one run in the fourth inning but were unable to overcome the Sagehens' nine-run second inning.

Pomona-Pitzer took control in the second inning, scoring nine runs. Claire Sefkow doubled and scored, while Natalie Murguia's single brought in Sefkow. Sophia Roberts added two RBIs with a double, and Ava Bautista and Kylie Liu each contributed RBI singles. Audrey Reimers and Sefkow continued the rally with additional two-run hits. The inning ended with the Sagehens leading 9-0.

In the fourth inning, Hamline responded with its lone run of the game. Josephine Cariveau singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Maddie Johnson. After four innings, Pomona-Pitzer led 9-1.

The game concluded with Pomona-Pitzer securing a 9-1 victory over the Pipers.

Josephine Cariveau recorded two assists and scored one run, demonstrating strong fielding and hitting contributions from her position. Brennan Reid finished with one hit and added three assists, showcasing reliable defensive skills at shortstop. Johnson collected one RBI and drew a walk, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Natalee Boelk pitched 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit, maintaining a WHIP of 0.45 and effectively keeping the opposition scoreless.

Allison Boynton faced challenges on the mound, pitching 1 1/3 innings while allowing nine earned runs on nine hits, including three doubles. Boynton did not issue any walks but finished with a WHIP of 8.18. Boelk provided stability in relief, pitching 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit or run and recording a WHIP of 0.45. Boelk's performance included five flyouts and three groundouts, maintaining control throughout her appearance.
