Pipers Drop Another Set Of Heartbreaker 1-Run Losses To CSS

DULUTH, Minn. — Hamline (12-23, 4-13) faced a challenging doubleheader against the College of St. Scholastica (17-15, 7-8) at Wade Stadium on Saturday, resulting in two close losses: a 1-0 defeat in the first game and a 3-2 loss in the second.

In the first game, Hamline fell to St. Scholastica in a tightly contested matchup, with both teams remaining scoreless through the first six innings. Despite the Pipers managing to place runners on base, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Jacob Barmore singled down the left-field line in the second inning, but a double play quickly followed, ending the inning. In the third inning, Jack Rheineck's single advanced Owen Giesen to third, yet the Pipers could not convert the chance into runs. The sixth inning saw Alex Hokenson and Maddex Van Slooten both reach base, adding pressure to St. Scholastica's defense, but Hamline could not bring a runner home.

The turning point of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning. After a hit-by-pitch and a walk, an error allowed St. Scholastica to load the bases. Luke Krull executed a bunt single that brought in the game's only run. Hamline's attempts to respond in the top of the seventh were halted, and the team was unable to score. Teagan Yotter completed a complete game with 6 1/3 innings pitched, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out five batters. Maddex Van Slooten collected one hit and drew a walk, while Ryan Burley and Jacob Barmore each added a hit in their performances.

In the second game, Hamline again struggled to secure a win, falling to St. Scholastica with a final score of 3-2. The Pipers managed five hits and two runs, while St. Scholastica achieved victory with a walk-off run in the ninth inning. Hamline fell behind early as St. Scholastica took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, with Damian Tamayo Vera scoring on an RBI single by Owen Maslowski.

The Pipers faced difficulties in the second inning, failing to capitalize on base runners, while St. Scholastica extended its lead with Tommy Crupi scoring on a passed ball, making it 2-0. Hamline got on the board in the third inning when Ryan Burley singled, advanced to second on a groundout, then scored due to a first baseman error on a play involving Jack Rheineck, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

Hamline leveled the score in the fourth inning, with Maddex Van Slooten singling, advancing on an error, and scoring on Bentley Casey's single, tying the game at 2-2. However, the game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning, when St. Scholastica broke the deadlock with Luke Krull scoring on an RBI single by Ben Schefers, leading to a 3-2 victory for St. Scholastica.

Ryan Burley recorded two hits and scored a run for Hamline, while Jack Rheineck added a hit and drove in a run. Maddex Van Slooten also collected a hit and crossed the plate once. On the mound, Hans Christensen pitched 7 innings, allowing 10 hits and 2 runs (only 1 earned), striking out 4 batters. Ben McCrady entered in relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings, surrendering 2 hits and 1 earned run, while walking 1 batter, as the pitchers combined for a total of 5 strikeouts in the game.
