SAINT PAUL, Minn. --- Hamline University Athletics mourns the passing of former Piper standout and longtime Minnesota athletics leader Kerwin Engelhart, who passed away on September 24 at the age of 97.

A native of Red Wing, Minnesota, Engelhart was an accomplished two-sport student-athlete during his time at Hamline and was a key member of one of the greatest teams in Piper basketball history.

Engelhart served as captain of Hamline's 1951 NAIA National Championship men's basketball team, playing under legendary head coach Joe Hutton Sr., where he earned three varsity letters and was named Second Team All-Conference during his junior and senior seasons.

His success extended to the track, where Engelhart earned four varsity letters and established a Hamline record in the half-mile with a time of 1:59.5, a mark that stood for eight years.

Following Hamline, Engelhart devoted his professional life to education and athletics. He became the boys basketball coach at Rochester John Marshall High School, leading the Rockets to the 1964 state championship game, before beginning a distinguished career in athletic administration. He served as John Marshall's activities director and later as supervisor of athletics for Rochester Public Schools until his retirement in 1987.

Engelhart was also an important advocate for the growth of girls' high school athletics in Rochester during the 1970s, helping guide the expansion and integration of opportunities for female student-athletes during a transformational period for high school sports in Minnesota.

His contributions to Minnesota athletics earned recognition throughout his career, including induction into the Minnesota Athletic Directors Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame in 1992. He also served on the MSHSL Board of Directors from 1981-85, including a term as board president.

Throughout a lifetime devoted to athletics, education and service, Engelhart remained connected to the values and experiences that shaped him as a student-athlete at Hamline.
