Al Danielson

  • Title
Assistant Cross Country Coach / Assistant Track & Field Coach (Distance)
Albert Danielson joined the Hamline University coaching staff in the Fall of 2017, starting out as an assistant coach for the sprints and relays under Paul Schmaedeke and then transitioning to distance running under Devin Monson. Danielson will be entering his seventh season as assistant track and field coach, and his fourth as the assistant cross country coach in 2024-25.

As a sprints coach, Danielson spent his time assisting with workout implementation, analyzing sprint and relay mechanics, and being the main workhorse with the Overspeed exercise tool. Now he spends his time running with the distance athletes and organizing cross country/track and field alumni events, such as the Alumni 4x400m Relay in the Spring. His coaching philosophy focuses on having high competitive energy, developing strong mental strength, and maintaining a healthy lifelong enjoyment for running.

Danielson came to Hamline from the great state of Washington and raced for the Hamline track & field team from 2013-17. He competed in the sprints ranging from the 55m to the 800m, with the 200m sprint (The Greatest Event) being the distance of choice, and earned an All-MIAC Sportsmanship award along the way. His collegiate career concluded with graduating from Hamline University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management.

Following graduation, Danielson shifted his competitive focus from sprinting to distance running and obstacle course racing. Some of his bigger accomplishments include a Boston-Qualifying marathon time, a top-100 finish at the 24-Hour World's Toughest Mudder, first American runner at the Swedish Fjalmaraton, fourth in the 2024 Spartan Race US National Series, first marathon team at the Birkie Trail Relays, and several podium and top-10 finishes in ultramarathons, trails, and obstacle course races. After a short-lived career as an average road runner and a barely-elite OCR athlete, he now enjoys running trails around the world and hanging out with dogs. He also enjoys really long bike rides, baking cheesecakes, bouldering, and going to the beach.
