Alex Schmidt brings extensive collegiate and private-sector strength and conditioning experience to Hamline, having worked with athletes across NCAA Division I, II, and III programs, as well as youth, professional, strength, and combat sports. Most recently, he served as the Director of Strength and Performance at Great Lakes Baseball Academy, where he developed athletes at the high school and post-graduate levels. His coaching experience also includes positions with Training HAUS, Colgate University, Swarthmore College, and Wilmington University.
Throughout his career, Schmidt has worked with athletes from more than 30 sports, developing an approach centered on evidence-based periodization, sport-specific movement enhancement, and individualized exercise selection. His programming incorporates athletes’ injury histories, movement limitations, and performance goals, with an emphasis on developing strength, power, movement quality, and long-term athletic development.
Schmidt’s coaching philosophy is also informed by his extensive experience in weightlifting and powerlifting, where he specializes in teaching and programming major strength movements, their derivatives, and appropriate regressions. His athletic background includes collegiate basketball at Concordia College and Augsburg University, as well as competitive Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting. During his powerlifting career, Schmidt set four Delaware state records in the super heavyweight division.
Schmidt enters his first season at Hamline with a strong connection to the MIAC, having previously competed in the conference as a student-athlete. After spending more than a decade on the East Coast developing as a coach and working across NCAA Division I, II, and III athletics, Schmidt is excited to return to the conference and continue his career in Saint Paul, where he and his family call home.
