Box Score For a half, Hamline's men's basketball team had the game going the way they wanted it to. They led by as many seven pont sinthe early going and held the advantage for most of the first 20 minutes, finishing the first session tied with powerful Whitworth, 33-33.
But the homestanding Pirates went on a 15-6 surge in the first 4:11 and held off a late HU surge for a 77-67 win in Spokane, Wash.
Whitworth has won 10 straight games while the Pipers fell to 5-4 overall.
Dior Ford again led the Pipers in scoring with 18 points.
Noah Aguirre added 14 and
Tyler Pannell chipped in with 12. Victor Easter tied a career high with seven rebounds and had five assists, one short of his career high.
The Pirates followed up the early second half spurt by stretching their lead to 15 points at 62-47 with 8:19 left. HU, however, refused to give in and began to chip away at the Pirates' edge, narrowing the margin to within a single basket at 68-65 with 1:37 left in the game.
However, Whitworth scored the next nine points to put the game out of reach.
Hamline had 11 steals in the game and shot 47 percent from the field for the game.
Hamline, which stands 2-2 in MIAC play, returns to conference action Wednesday, January 2 at Macalester. HU is at Gustavus on Saturday, January 5.
