Men's BB Faces No. 1 Team (and neighbor)

1/26/2013 1:15:00 AM

It's not often that a Hamline basketball team gets to face the No. 1 team in the country in Division III. The fact that the team is located a couple of miles away only adds to the intrigue.

But such is the case this Saturday, January 26 when the Pipers head over to the Anderson center at St. Thomas.

It's the second meeting this year for the two rivals. When they met on December 1, the Tommies took a 80-59 decision that was a lot more competitve than the final score would indicate.

The score was tied for the 10th time at 33-all with less than 18 minutes to play when the visitors, aided in part by six consecutive HU fouls and an equal number of turnovers, shot off on a 15-0 run to effectively decide the game. The Pipers held the Tommies to just 1-for-12 from three-point range. Tyler Pannell scored 14 to lead the HU scoring.

Hamline is 7-11 overall, 4-9 in the conference. They have split a pair of games this week already, scoring a season high for point in a 94-78 victory at St. Mary's Monday night. They dropped a 76-60 decision to Augsburg at home Wednesday.

The Tommies (17-1, 12-1 MIAC) have also had a .500 week so far. They lost their first game of the year, 54-52, at Concordia Monday night but rebounded to rout St. Mary's, 87-46, on Wednesday.

Game time is 3:00 p.m.
