Box Score On paper, it went as just one point. To the Hamline's men's soccer team, however, it was much more.Â
Gilbert Ghong scored an early goal andÂ
Joey Matesi made seven saves -- including two in overtime -- as the Pipers held powerful St. Thomas to a 1-1 2 OT tie on the latter's field Saturday.
It marked the first time the Pipers had taken a point from the Tommies since 2008. UST is undefeated in five MIAC games and stands 8-1-3 overall.Â
The Pipers, who last won at St. Thomas in 2006, got off to a good start when Ghong broke free and slipped the ball past UST goalie Ryan Holte 6:50 into the game.
The Tommies attacked relentlessly but Matesi held firm until beaten from the top of the box at 61:13.
The freshman shut the door the rest of the way as HU improved to 3-5-1 overall (0-2-1 MIAC).Â
The Piper will play six of their next seven games at Paterson Field, starting against St. Olaf Wednesday. Concordia visits next Saturday.Â
