Lynsey Reimer and Caitlyn Gottwald had big nights. But St. Mary's proved too tenacious on its home floor and defeated the Pipers, 3-1, Wednesday in Winona.
Hamline fell back to .500 in MIAC play at 3-3 and now stands 12-10 overall.
Reimer set a school record with 36 digs and Gottwald had 14 kills for Hamline. Steph Kaup added 10 kills for the Pipers. After dropping a 20-25 decision in the first set, Hamline came back for a solid 25-12 decision to even the match. HU worked its way to a 21-17 lead in the third set and later had to fend off two set points before bowing, 25-27. SMU then took the next set by15-25.
Reimer broke Jenna Witt's school standard of 34 achieved three times (twice in 2004 and once in 2005). She stands 9th on the all-time list with 1,043 digs. The junior sits third in the MIAC with 387 digs and is fourth in digs per set at 4.96. In addition to Reimer, Molly Hurrle shook off an ankle injury in mid-match to post 44 assists. Hurrle is third in the conference at 10.71 assists per set.
Hamline returns home to host Moravian and St. Scholastica in non-conference action Saturday.
