Andrew Simondet CR

Men's Soccer Storms Past Crown, 6-0

8/30/2013 8:32:00 PM

Box Score One might say that HU freshman Nick Simondet (pictured with ball) made quite a first impression.

But what will he do for an encore?

Simondet scored twice and assisted on two other goals as the Piper men's soccer team opened the season on a dandy note with a 6-0 win over Crown at Paterson Field.

Jake Niemann also scored twice with Brandon De La Rosa (who had two assists) and Kristian Sebion adding singles as the Pipers won their season opener for the first time since 2010. HU held a big edge in overall shots (23-8) and controlled play most of the way.

However, it was still a scoreless game when Simondet took matters into his own feet. He scored his goals just 3:13 apart to help Hamline to a 3-0 intermission advantage. (De La Rosa added the third.)

In the second half, Sebion struck first on a three way that was started by Simondet. Niemann added the final two, the last one coming on a breakaway pass from ... Simondet.

Derrick Mora stopped the only shot in goal he faced in the first 70 minutes of play. The Storm worked over his replacement, Joey Matesi a bit but the freshman stopped the three direct shots tendered his way to earn his share of the shutout.

Hamline will go for two in a row when they host North Central at Paterson Wednesday. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
