VB Puts Up Stiff Fight In 3-1 Loss To Augsburg

Box Score Spurred on by the largest crowd in recent memory at a volleyball match at Hutton Arena, Hamline kept second place Augsburg on its toes all night before dropping a 3-1 decision. 

The Pipers took a wild first set, 26-24 -- just the second set they had claimed from Augsburg in the last eight years. The Auggies, howqever, came back to win several long rallies and take 19-25, 21-25, 17-25 decisions. Hamline dropped into a four-way tie for third place with a 4-2 MIAC mark. They stand 12-4 overall. 

Michelle Mattke had five of her team high 10 kills in an opening set that saw at least two rallies last longer than a minute. In the second set, the Auggies used an 8-3 run to break away from a one-point lead to even the score at a set apiece. 

Augsburg led most of the way in the third set but the Pipers eventually gave way. There were 10 ties in the fourth set. The last of these was at 14-14. The Auggies came up with seven of the next nine points and went on to the win.

Vassi Prattas had 23 assists and Amelia Jensen added 18. Lynsey Reimer (pictured) had 24 digs to move into fourth place all-time with 1,571. She is now the shcool's all-time leader in Digs Per Set with 5.10.

The Pipers, who suffered their first loss of the year at Hutton, stay home to face St. Mary's October 15. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
