Box Score Francisco Guzman and
Abbai Habte were in the right place at the right time. As a result, Hamline earned its first MIAC men's soccer win of the season, upending previously undefeated St. Thomas, 2-1, before a happy crowd at Paterson Field. Â
Derrick Mora recorded three saves in goal as the Pipers took their first win over their St. Paul neighbors since 2006.
It was a rugged affair from the start with neither team giving much room in the first half. UST broke through on a goal at Matt Bouche 41:19 into the game. Guzman (pictured, 3) wasted no time responding, knocking the ball loose from a UST defender and slipping it into an open net 21 seconds later for his first collegiate goal. The game remained tied at 1 until midway in the second half when Habte positioned himself between two defenders in front of the UST goal and finished off a three-way scoring play with
Tyler Tallaksen and
Victor Lara for his second goal of the season.Â
That ended the scoring but not the action. The Tommies picked up the pace and made several attempts to force the play deep in the Pipers' end but Mora remained firm and kept them at bay the rest of the afternoon.Â
Hamline improved to 1-3 in the MIAC, 4-6-1 overall. They will host Northwestern (Roseville) in a non-conference affair on Tuesday, October 7 at Paterson Field. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
