Pipers Strike Early For Second Straight Men's Soccer Win

10/7/2014 6:29:00 PM

Box Score Hamline's men's soccer team scored twice in the first 12:19 of play and held on at the end for their second win in a row, a 2-1 non-conference decision over Northwestern (Roseville) at Paterson Field, Oct. 7.

HU climbed within a game of .500 at 5-6-1 overall with the win on a sunny but brisk day.

As they did in the 2-1 win over St. Thomas last Saturday, Hamline took advantage of good positioning to pin the Eagles on their heels with a pair of early goals.

Gilbert Ghong (pictured) started it with his team leading sixth goal of the year, heading James Reardon's throwin just 7:08 into the game. Five minutes later, Ghong got loose at the left side and banged a shot off the crossbar. The ball went directly to Abbai Habte, who quickly drilled it into the net at 12:19.

HU kept up the attack the rest of the half, outshooting the Eagles, 7-1.

Northwestern caused a lot more problems in the second half, eventualy scoring when Matthew McCann redirected a corner kick past HU tender Derrick Mora at 69:59. HU tightened matters in their own end after that and held the Eagles at bay the rest of the way for the win.

Hamline will go for three in a row Saturday against Concordia in Moorhead. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
