Balanced Attack Lifts Pipers VB Into Second Place

Box Score Hamline's volleyball team picked an excellent time to have their best MIAC hitting effort of the season. The Pipers hit a solid .242 for the night and kept Macalester at arm's length all night in posting a 3-0 victory at Leonard Center. 

HU moved into a tie for second place with Augsburg at 4-1 and improved to 12-3 with the win. The Pipers face the Auggies at Hutton Arena Friday night. 

Katie Ayres led a balanced offensive attack with 15 kills. The junior hit .344 for the night, a mark topped only by Stephanie Kaup, who had nine kills and hit .381. Gabriella Feldt also had nine kills while Michelle Mattke added eight and a dozen digs.

The Pipers struggled with the host Scots in the first set. There were six ties before HU broke free at the end for a 25-16 decision. In the middle set, the Pipers grabbed an early seven-point lead at 9-2 only to see Mac rally to take five different leads. In the end, though, the Pipers prevailed, 25-23. With Hamline leading 9-8 in the third set, Mattke served five straight winners and the Pipers never looked back in recording a 25-20 win. 

Vassi Prattas (pictured with ball) had 22 assists and Amelia Jensen added 17. Lynsey Reimer led all backcourters with 21 digs. The Iowan has 1,547 for her caeer, just six behind Tara Ristau for fourth place all-time in school history. 

The Pipers now take a perfect 5-0 home court record into the match with the Auggies. It's the kickstarter to Homecoming Weekend. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
