Box Score The Hamline men's soccer team left Iowa undefeated and unscored upon. How they got there was a little unusual.
The Pipers followed up a 2-0 win over Bethany Luthreran with a scoreless tie against Buena Vista Sunday afternoon in appropriately named Storm Lake, Iowa. The game was called in the second half due to lightning. Since the game has passed the 70-minute mark, it goes into the books as an official game.
It was a game that almost didn't happen. Lightning struck Storm Lake in mid-afternoon. The start of the game was delayed a half-hour. When the action started, the Pipers had the better of play, holding a 11-4 edge in total shots.
Tamir Hussein, Oscar Campbell, Gilbert Ghong and
Stuart Trench had two each.
At the other end of the field,
Derrick Mora was sharp again, recording three saves in the first half.
But neither team could find the back of the net. Lightning flared again midway in the second half, forcing referee Josh Gerber to suspend play for a second -- and final -- time.
HU thus ended their southern sojourn with a 1-0-1 record. The Pipers are home next weekend to face Marian (September 5) and Augustana (Ill.). Both games start at 4:00 p.m. at Paterson Field.
