Box Score Hamline came close to ending Gustavus' dream of an unbeaten MIAC volleyball season. In the end, the Gusties held on for a gritty 3-1 decision in St. Peter Wednesday night.Â
But it wasn't easy.Â
The Pipers had the same amount of players as did the highflying Gusties in double digits for kills (three), led in overall digs (77-70), had the same amount of blocks (five) and trailed just slightly in assists (55-60).Â
Julia Zolnosky (pictured) had another double-double with a game high 18 kills and 15 assists.Â
Michelle Mattke added 15 kills and a game high 18 digs.Â
Jena Meyer chipped in with 11 kills to help the offensive charge. All three also hit over .200 for the night.
Amelia Jensen had an impressive double-double with 39 assists and 14 digs.
After losing the first set 25-19, HU rallied from a 20-15 deficit for a thrilling 27-25 win in the second set. Mattke played a key role here, recording three consecutive kills as part of the comeback.
GAC then held on to take 25-19 and 25-23 decisions to claim the win to improve to 24-2 overall and clinch first place in the MIAC with a 10-0 mark.
Hamline is now 11-14 overall, 3-7 in the MIAC. The Pipers wrap up the season Friday at St. Catherine. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
