ST. PAUL, Minn. — Hamline lost to Wis.-Superior 3-1 on Friday at Hutton Arena, with set scores of 26-24, 21-25, 21-25 and 21-25. The Pipers recovered from a 16-14 deficit in the opening set to move ahead 19-17 and took the first set, but Wis.-Superior won the next three sets by matching 25-21 scores. Hamline finished with 47 kills and 76 digs, while Wis.-Superior had 46 kills and 76 digs.
Hamline took the opening set 26-24, finishing with a 17-10 advantage in kills behind five from
Sophia Johnson and 13 assists from
Cameryn Sand. Makenna Hohbein had five kills for Wis.-Superior, but
Lexi Helmin closed the set with a kill for 25-24 and a service ace on set point.
The Pipers finished with 11 kills in the second set, led by
Sophia Johnson with four and
Lexi Helmin with three, while Wis.-Superior recorded 10 kills and three Sydney Smith service aces in a 25-21 set win. Hamline cut an early 7-1 deficit to 8-6 and later closed to 22-21 on three straight Johnson kills followed by a Sand kill, but Wis.-Superior scored the final three points.
Wis.-Superior held a 12-10 edge in kills in the third set, with Kyndra Peterson recording three and closing the 25-21 set with a kill. Hamline spread its 10 kills among four players and got eight assists plus a service ace from Sand, while scoring four straight late points to move from 24-17 to 24-21 before Wis.-Superior ended it.
Wis.-Superior finished the fourth set with a 14-9 edge in kills and added two service aces in a 25-21 set win. Hamline pulled within 21-20 on three straight Wis.-Superior attack errors, while
Alli Helmin led the Pipers' attack in the set with four kills.
Sand finished with 37 assists and added 10 digs, three kills and a service ace.
Claire Siems collected 22 digs and added five assists and a service ace.
Sophia Johnson recorded 11 kills and two block assists.
Lydia Graham posted nine kills, 12 digs, a service ace and a block assist.
Hamline is 2-4 overall. Wis.-Superior is 4-0 overall.
