Garvis Big Night Helps MBB To First Win

11/24/2015 9:16:00 PM

Box Score It was a little hairy at the end but the HU men's basketball team won its first game of the season, hitting three free throws in the final 11 seconds of play to defeat North Central (Minn.), 77-74, in Minneapolis Tuesday night.

Quinton Garvis (pictured) had a career high 22 points and nailed two of those key charity tosses as the Pipers evened their 2015-16 mark at 1-1. Dylan See-Rockers added 12 points (including the other free throw in that segment) and Zach Smith checked in with 11.

The Pipers broke fast, using an 11-2 run to open an 11-point lead midway in the first half. HU kept on shooting, scored the last five points of the half and went to the locker room with a 46-29 edge.

The Rams, however, came back quickly. They scored six of the first eight points in the second half. HU led by 12 with 13:48 when North Central started its move, getting to within three at 64-61 with 5:23 to go. They cut it to two at 74-72 but Garvis and See-Rockers (who also led with six rebounds) made the necessary free throws and the Pipers grabbed an offensive rebound when they needed one to preserve the win.

The Pipers now head to Colorado Springs, Col. this weekend to play in a tournament at Colorado College. They face Whitworth (3-0), rated No. 3 in the country in the preseason D3hoops.com poll on Friday at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, HU takes on Howard Payne (0-3 going into a game with Colorado College on Friday).
