Box Score Hamline's men's basketball team put up some solid numbers Wednesday against St. John's at Hutton Arena. The Pipers shot 44 per cent and three players in double figures for scoring. But the visitors had an even hotter hand and pulled away late for an 83-70 victory. Quinton Garvis drilled three three-pointers among his team high 15 points while Zach Smith (pictured) added 12 and Isaac Brooks was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line to garner 10 points for HU. 

St. John's, however, had five players in double figures, shot 58 per cent for the night and held a 36-27 rebounding edge to claim the decision. 

It was a moral victory of sorts for the Pipers to go into the locker room at halftime down just 42-35. SJU shot 64 per cent from the field. Garvis offset much of that with 10 points to keep the Pipers afloat. SJU started fast in the second half, scoring the first six points for a 13-point edge at 48-35. Hamline roared back with a 14-3 run that was capped by a pair of Garvis three-pointers and a Dylan See-Rockers layup to close the gap to 51-49 with 15:46 to play. SJU responded with a 9-0 outburst and that was that. 

Nick Powell came off the bench for a team high six rebounds and tied Smith for the assist lead with four. 

Hamline returns to action Saturday against St. Olaf (3-3, 2-1 MIAC) at Hutton Arena. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
