Box Score In one of the most dramatic finishes in years, the Hamline volleyball team rallied to defeat St. Benedict, 3-2, in St. Joseph Wednesday night.
Danica Hanson's kill was the final blow as HU took a 18-16 victory in the climatic fifth set to cap a wild win that elevated Hamline to 9-8 overall, 3-4 in the MIAC.
Beth Goodman led the offense with 14 kills and
Julia Zolnosky added 12 for the Pipers, who won the first two sets and then watched host CSB rally to claim the next two sets, forcing the tiebreaker. Hanson, who hit a solid .278 for the night, added seven.
Morgen Coleman had 37 assists and 13 digs.
Amelia Jensen had a season high 23 digs and
Marisa Franco chipped in with 20 and a pair of service aces. Zolnosky had a dozen digs. Hamline had 96 as a team.
The night started well with Hamline claiming 26-24 and 25-16 victories. CSB rallied to win the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-13, to force the finale.
And what a finale it was. CSB jumped to a 10-6 lead only to see
Cassie Doerr serve what ended being up six straight winners and a 12-10 Piper lead. CSB rallied back to tie matters at 12. The team traded the next four points, setting up the dramatic finish. A
Cass Bittle kill gave HU a 17-16 lead. Hanson then sealed the win with her kill and Hamline had the win that kept their playoff hopes alive.
The Pipers are now off for a week. They will host Augsburg at Hutton Arena on Wednesday, October 19. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
